perseverance pays
When I first started making art in my childhood and in my teens, I would start and then complete pieces in the same day. But as I got older I found that sometimes with certain ones you have to live with them for a while to let them evolve.
This piece called "bird spirit" I started prior to 2009 (prior to CRNA school), I thought I finished in 2012, but in fact I later decided this month to sand the face off and print the original cyanotype face. I'm so glad I did. Over the years this piece has evolved so much and now I am FINALLY happy with it. I got my husband's seal of approval too, which I have to say is very important. He came to me on his own and told me he had noticed I redid the face and loves it. He told me it was "done." And not to do anything else to it. I agree.
Here the piece is when I thought I was finished:
Here the piece is at an even earlier stage:
Here is me working on it this month (March 2013), sanded the face off, and then re-printed the cyanotype face onto the wood:
Here is the finished image, now just waiting to frame this piece. The face is very subtle, but it emanates a "ghost" presence which is exactly what I had hoped for...
Here are two close ups:

UFC & Bar-b-que time!
Just in time for some much needed fun, we had a small get together last night for homemade goodies, bar-b-que and some good UFC! I've never watched a UFC fight from start to finish, so this was my first "event." Very entertaining I must admit, and I'm ready to see the heavyweights next time!
Thanks to everyone who came out, and Cisco for the great grilling skills!
Menu:
bar-b-que chicken, 4 kinds of sausage, fajitas & ribs
homemade potato salad
deviled eggs
spicy guacomole
asparagus
bacon wrapped jalapenos w cream cheese/jalapeno jack cheese
sweet hawaian rolls
fruit salad
homemade key lime pie

Schmizel's 10 yr Birthday
It's been one tough month, and so last week it was time to do something light which ended up being a small celebration for Schimzel's 10th Birthday! I can still remember the morning back in 2003 when I woke up to witness my first cat birth! Schmizel's mother was a stray cat that I had taken in one weekend when Patrick was gone out of town on work.
It wasn't long while rubbing her belly that I figured out she was in fact pregnant! I guess she was looking for someone to take care of her during her pregnancy. We ended up moving to a different apartment and brought her with us. One March morning, she had Schmizel along with 4 other brothers (all boys). Schmizel was the only long haired black and white. All the other kitties were short haired tabby.
Schmizel was the last to be born. His mother always waved her tail this certain way when she came up to me for attention. Schmizel does the say tail wave....exactly. :)
Over the years, Schmizel has been with me through countless holidays, birthday, moving into my first house, the death of my mother, nursing school, CRNA school, jobs, and over 10 yrs of marriage. I am certain my heart will break one day when he dies, but hopefully we have many more years of purring and cat tail waving. :)

Down House- Houston/Heights
Was driving by this place on Yale and decided to stop in. I was
pleasantly surprised when I walked in by the overall feel of the place.
Love the mix matched furniture and the couches that serve as seating
for some of the tables.
Also, there is outdoor seating available with outdoor heaters and lighting stringed across the patio. The bar inside is beautiful and I love that they used mirrors behind all the liquor bottles.
I was greeted nicely by the hostess, and my waiter came quickly to take my drink order. They were accommodating when I asked for salad as a substitute for fries with my meal.
What I was most blown away by was the menu. The first page of the menu is an entire page letter from the owner "chris" in which he explains their philosophy. I really enjoyed reading it and appreciated the passion that was communicated.
Next, I just adored the way they did their drink menu. So creative with all the comments! Also, the way they bring you the check in an old used book is just adorable.
The other thing you will notice is the interesting decorating style. I love it. There is an old periodic table on one wall that I really likes. They also bolted an old wire basket to one wall to hold all the rolled silverware. Love it. There is a sense of "repurposed" materials here that is nice.
The tea was great & the food was high quality and delicious.
Will be back!
P.S. my favorite thing about the whole place is the front door.
